Aluminum Exterior Siding | Installation & Repair

Revêtement en aluminium horizontal gris pâle avec fenêtres à cadre noir sur une résidence à deux étages — Gouttières et Revêtements Synergy

Aluminum siding is built on a material fact: aluminum does not rust. It is lightweight and can be cold-bent on site. It is the sheet metal used for gutters, soffits, and capping: one material for walls and finishing details. Gouttières et Revêtements Synergy installs and repairs it in Lanaudière, the Laurentides, the North Shore, Laval, and Montreal.

It does not rust—and that shows at damaged areas

Rust is a reaction specific to iron; aluminum contains none. When exposed to air, it instead forms an oxide layer that slows further reaction. The difference matters wherever the sheet metal is exposed: an on-site cut, a deep scratch, or a screw hole. On steel, these can become starting points for corrosion and need to be concealed or touched up. On aluminum, a cut edge remains a cut edge.

An honest distinction: not rusting does not mean having nothing to worry about. When in contact with other metals in the presence of water, aluminum can corrode through galvanic action. Nails, screws, and flashing must be compatible with it.

Lightweight: what that changes for the wall

Aluminum weighs very little. The substrate does not have to carry a significant load, which matters on an older building or an addition with light framing. Panels can be handled by one person at height, without lifting equipment.

Like any metal, it expands in the sun and contracts in the cold. Installation must therefore remain floating: fasteners placed in the center of oval slots, never tightened fully, with clearance maintained against trim. A panel screwed tight has nowhere to move: it buckles.

It can be worked on site

Aluminum can be cold-bent on a portable brake at the base of the building. We take the measurements, then form each piece for that exact location: corners, returns, sills, or the perimeter of a window that is neither plumb nor square.

Because seamless gutters are made from the same type of coil, the wall, gutter, fascia capping, and window surrounds can share the same material and finish family. The façade then reads as a cohesive whole. We still verify finishes before ordering: two product lines do not match simply because they carry the same colour name.

Walls

Horizontal lap siding or vertical panels over furring strips, with starter, corner, and finishing trim in the same sheet metal.

Fascia and surrounds

Capping for fascia, window frames, and door frames, bent to measurements taken on site.

Roof overhangs

Perforated soffits that allow air into the attic, with seamless gutters formed in the same finish.

The trade-off: it is a soft metal

It should be said plainly: aluminum is softer than steel and dents more easily. A ladder leaning against it, a ball, a stone thrown by a snowblower, or hail—what marks steel dents aluminum.

A dent cannot be corrected by straightening the sheet metal: the factory finish does not follow the deformation. The affected panel must be replaced. This is why we offer aluminum higher up and on sections with complex geometry, matched with more impact-resistant materials at ground level where needed.

Another trade-off is that the finish ages. Under UV rays, baked paint can chalk: running a hand over an old aluminum wall leaves it powdery. It can be washed and repainted with a metal product, but this is maintenance to plan for.

The connection between the wall and capping

Aluminum is almost never limited to the walls, and workmanship is judged at the junctions. The siding ends in finishing trim; that trim connects to the window-surround capping; the fascia capping carries the gutter. Each piece overlaps the next in the direction of water flow.

These components must therefore be planned together. This avoids common mistakes: connecting a new wall to fascia that is already rotten, or adding capping afterward that blocks the air intake of a soffit.

What aluminum does not solve

Like any wall cladding, it directs water; it does not stop it. Anything that gets behind the siding must be able to drain out at the bottom of the wall. That is the role of the weather-resistive barrier, drainage space, and flashing—not the sheet metal. Nor does it correct a gutter that overflows and soaks the wall with every rainfall. That cause must be addressed first, at the gutter or at the roof.

Maintenance and repair

A dented or punctured panel can be replaced individually if the profile and colour are still available. On an older wall, the exact colour may no longer be on the market; in that case, we redo an entire section rather than install a single piece that would stand out.

We assess the wall before recommending a material: exposure, substrate condition, existing drainage, and how roof water behaves.
