Rénoclimat: Quebec’s real financial assistance program for renovations
Rénoclimat is not a tax credit — it’s a grant program from the Government of Quebec to improve a home’s energy performance. It is managed by Transition énergétique Québec through an energy assessment before and after the work, not simply a claim on a tax return.
How Rénoclimat actually works
The process follows a specific order: a Rénoclimat advisor first visits the property for an energy assessment (fees apply), including a blower door test and a recommendations report. The work is then carried out, followed by a second assessment confirming the real improvement in energy performance before the grant is paid out. The home must have been built before 2012 and be the owner’s principal residence.
Amounts for air sealing work
Based on amounts published by the Government of Quebec, improving a home’s air sealing — caulking areas prone to air leaks — can qualify for financial assistance of $400 to $800. Replacing a door or window with an ENERGY STAR certified model can qualify for $150 per unit. Separate amounts exist for roof, foundation, exterior wall or exposed floor insulation, and for certain mechanical systems.
