Maibec siding is genuine prefinished wood: solid wood boards stained or painted at the factory before the material ever reaches the job site. It is not an imitation of wood—it is wood. It retains wood’s appearance and texture, along with its requirements. Gouttières et Revêtements Synergy installs this exterior wood siding in Lanaudière, the Laurentides, the North Shore, Laval, and Montreal.
What genuine wood provides
The grain is real. It varies from one board to the next, knots do not repeat, and raking light creates shadows that a molded panel cannot reproduce. A pressed or embossed product always repeats the same pattern at regular intervals; on a large façade, the eye eventually notices it. Wood has no pattern to repeat.
Wood remains a living material. It absorbs moisture, expands, dries, and returns to its original position. Siding installation must allow for this movement rather than restrict it: fastening that lets the board move, gaps at joints, and drainage space behind the lap siding. A board held too tightly will split.
What the factory finish changes
The finish is applied in the factory under controlled conditions, to the faces and edges of the board—including the back, which will no longer be accessible once the wall is built. Paint applied on site depends on the weather that day, the moisture content of the wood, airborne dust, and drying time between coats. The result is rarely consistent from one wall to the next.
A factory finish avoids this: no runs, no brush marks, and no thinner areas where the applicator did not apply enough product. The color is consistent across the entire surface, including the faces that will no longer be visible.
What this finish does not change is the cuts made on site. Every trimmed board exposes bare wood at the end, and that is where water gets in. These cut ends must be sealed with the manufacturer’s touch-up product, board by board, during installation. Skipping this step shows up later—never right away.
What this siding requires
Finish maintenance
The sun wears down the finish, especially on south- and west-facing walls. The finish can be renewed—that is expected—but it must be done while it is still protecting the wood. Faded color, a chalky feel to the touch, or a noticeable loss of sheen on one wall are signs that it is time. Waiting until bare wood appears turns surface maintenance into preparation work.
Ground clearance
The bottom of the siding must not touch soil, grass, asphalt, or accumulated snow. When it does, water rises into the wood fibers through capillary action, and the finish fails from underneath. Clear ground clearance, grading that directs water away from the foundation, and vegetation trimmed back from the wall resolve most cases.
Attention to damp areas
A north-facing wall, a façade beneath trees, an inside corner that never dries, or a section soaked by a poorly directed downspout: the finish ages faster in these areas, and algae takes hold. These locations require separate inspection and, at times, maintenance on a different schedule from the rest of the house.
The details that determine the result
| Location |
What happens if it is neglected |
| Cut ends made on site |
Bare wood absorbs water through the end grain, and the board darkens from the cut end. |
| Bottom of the wall |
Ground moisture rises into the first row and causes the finish to blister from behind. |
| Around windows and doors |
Without flashing and caulking in the right places, water gets behind the siding and remains there. |
| Downspout path |
A gutter downspout that discharges onto the wall soaks the same strip of wood with every rainfall. |
| Space behind the lap siding |
Without furring strips or an air outlet at the bottom, anything that gets behind the siding cannot drain or dry. |
Installation and other options
A factory finish reduces painting work; it does not eliminate it. If you are still comparing materials, see our exterior siding comparison, or the page on wood siding finished on site, which follows a different installation and maintenance path.
For routine maintenance, gentle cleaning removes deposits without damaging the finish, and repairs replace damaged boards when the rest of the wall is sound.
