Attic ventilation
Attic ventilation helps regulate temperature and moisture beneath the roof by allowing air to circulate between intake and exhaust openings. Proper airflow can limit heat buildup, reduce condensation risks, and support the long-term performance of roofing components.
Why Attic Ventilation Matters
An attic can become very hot when solar heat is transferred through the roof. Without adequate ventilation, this heat may accumulate beneath the roof covering and affect shingles, underlayment, and other roof components.
Moisture is another important concern. Warm, humid air from inside the home can enter the attic and condense on colder surfaces. Over time, excess humidity can contribute to damp insulation, mold growth, and deterioration of wood components. A balanced ventilation system helps remove warm, humid air while bringing in drier outdoor air.
How Attic Ventilation Works
Effective attic ventilation generally relies on a continuous path for air to enter near the lower edge of the roof and exit near the upper portion. As warm air rises, it can leave through exhaust vents, drawing fresh air into the attic through intake vents.
- Roof vents: Installed directly on the roof, these vents provide an outlet for warm air to escape from the attic.
- Soffit vents: Located along the underside or edge of the roof, soffit vents allow outside air to enter the attic and support airflow toward upper exhaust vents.
- Gable vents: Installed in gable walls, these openings can help release warm air near the upper area of the attic.
- Dormer vents: Installed on or near dormers, these vents can provide another route for hot air to escape.
The arrangement, number, and placement of vents should allow air to move through the attic rather than concentrating airflow in only one area. Intake openings must also remain clear so exhaust vents can work as intended.
Maintaining Attic Vents
Attic vents should be inspected and cleaned regularly. Leaves, twigs, snow, insect nests, and other debris can obstruct openings and reduce airflow. Blocked soffit vents or roof vents can allow heat and moisture to build up in the attic.
During an inspection, look for visible debris, damaged screens, blocked openings, signs of condensation, damp insulation, or staining on roof framing. If you notice persistent humidity, mold, or roof-related concerns, a professional assessment can help identify whether ventilation is contributing to the issue.
