Tip for cleaning your gutters effectively

Clean your gutters by removing loose debris, flushing the troughs with a garden hose, and checking that water flows freely through each downspout. Work carefully, use proper safety equipment, and stop if the ladder setup does not feel secure.

Prepare safely before cleaning

Gather your tools before climbing: work gloves, safety goggles, a sturdy ladder, a small scoop or trowel, a bucket, and a garden hose. Place the ladder on firm, level ground and position it so you can reach the gutter without overextending.

• Wear protective gear: Gloves and eye protection help protect against sharp debris, insects, and dirt.
• Use a stable ladder: Check that the ladder is secure before climbing and move it as needed rather than leaning too far.
• Work in dry conditions: Avoid cleaning gutters during rain, high winds, or when surfaces are slippery.

Remove debris and flush the gutter

Start near the downspout and remove leaves, twigs, and accumulated debris with a scoop or small trowel. Put the debris in a bucket instead of dropping it onto the ground below.

• Clear the gutter channel: Remove larger material by hand or with a scoop.
• Flush with water: Use a garden hose to rinse away smaller particles and confirm that water moves toward the downspout.
• Watch for overflow: Water spilling over the gutter may indicate remaining debris or a drainage issue that needs attention.

Check the downspouts and plan regular maintenance

Inspect each downspout while flushing the gutter. If water does not drain properly, remove visible obstructions at the opening. A plumbing snake may help with a blockage farther inside the downspout. Clean gutters at least twice a year, and inspect them more often when nearby trees shed leaves or debris.

If a blockage cannot be cleared safely from the ground or ladder, consider arranging professional gutter cleaning rather than forcing the issue.
