Most importantly, remember that 1.5 m is a regulatory minimum, not a guarantee: on ground that slopes up toward the house, water discharged at the required distance can naturally flow back to the wall. The grade matters just as much as the extension.

What Building Type Changes About Installation

The bylaw establishes where water must end up; the building’s layout determines what needs to be installed to get it there. On a detached home, each façade generally has its own perimeter, so the discharge point can be positioned without having to negotiate around a neighbour’s property. On a semi-detached, row house, or attached home, the sides are narrow or shared, and the downspout often needs to be routed toward the front or rear to remain within the lot boundaries.

A duplex or small apartment building presents another issue: more roof area draining through fewer outlets. The number of downspouts should therefore be considered before the gutter size, and 6 inches becomes relevant—provided additional outlets are added; otherwise, a wider gutter only delays overflow. A mobile home requires fastening suited to its roof edge. On a low-rise building, access is by ladder rather than an aerial platform: the work comes down to linear footage and the strength of the support.

Two things should be checked on site rather than on a plan: fascia that has already carried old brackets, and a downspout still connected to a buried pipe. The latter directly concerns Article 4.2.1, since the bylaw requires surface discharge. On an irregular lot, there is less flexibility in selecting the discharge point: this must be identified before the downspouts are installed.
